Sally Mann's Photography

I really liked Mann’s photography about her family. I think they are very natural. Her intention wasn’t provoke a polemic. As she said in the video we saw last class the most of the time children were there and she just took pictures of them. I think the polemic is because sometimes people gave things meanings things don’t have. But that’s one of the consequences of being an artist. I don’t think that in this specific case Mann deliberately provoke the controversy but I know that sometimes artists do that. In my opinion one of the objectives of an artist is stimulate our imagination but our imagination sometimes can go so far.

  1. Hey Uchy.
Mann is really an artist, and I believe her. Actually, I can see the feeling in her photos, which are not an effortless job. For instance, the photo above is one of my favorites because appeals to your imagination. Probably, it is the unclear background, or the children’s deep looks what made this photo singular.Personally, I feel that the children can take in my mind with their looks.

However, I consider Mapplethorpe and Serrano’s photos interesting too. I want to know more about these artists; hence I will be able to understand well their jobs.

If you were an artist (photographer), what kind of photos would you take?

  2. Hey Uchy,

Great post! You do an excellent job of exploring the relationship among the artist, her imagination, and what the public sees. I am interested to learn by what you mean when you say "that our imagination can only go so far." Are you saying that it is the viewer's imagination that runs away from or ahead of the artist's, or are you saying that it is the artist's which is running away from the viewer?

    Keep up the nice work!

  3. Uchy I agree with you. I don't thing those photos are pornographic as a lot of people said. I yhing they are very artistic and with a special sense. By the way, they are her children, I don't thing that a mother should use her children in order to do "bad things" with them.

    I like these pictures.

  4. Hi Uchy,

I think Mann just wants to pursuit the art and tell us by taking these pictures. It seems to be similar to Madonna. They don't try to provoke the public. They just show themself by inventing different shows or photos.

  5. Hey! Thanks for your comments!
I think if I were an artist I would like to take the kind of pictures that Mann took of their children. I don't want to take pictures necessarily of children, I would like to take pictures about everything, but what I like about Mann is that her pictures look natural, not prepare and that's the kind of picture I would like to take if I were an artist.
On the other hand what I mean when I said that "our imagination sometimes can go so far" is that humans have a huge imagination and sometimes that imagination gives meanings to the pieces of arts that the artists originally didn't have. For example the intention of Mann wasn't do child pornography, but that's what people thought she was doing when the pictures of her children were published.
